This house sits on a hill, with the yard falling away from the house in the back. So we had to find a way to make the deck relate both to the rooms inside the house and to the yard. A three-season porch, which struck straight off the back of the first floor, high in the sky, was demolished to make room for the deck.

The entranceway in this house has a beautiful switchback stairway that you first see through the glass in the front door.

Unfortunately the line of the stairs was obscured by a radiator that had been moved from its original position, and the detailing on the railing post had been covered with multiple layers of paint. We moved the radiator, painted the walls using subtle but rich colors, and stripped and varnished the distinctively-carved post.
